Borgenfjorden roundtrip by bike

Borgenfjorden round trip is a bike ride of 32 km around the Borgenfjorden and the Golden Road, about 1,5 hrs north of Triondheim.  The route winds its way between Trønder farms and beautiful cultural landscapes and passes the medieveal chruch Mære, the deer farm Gjørv, Gangstad farm dairy and Gulburet farmshop and cafe.

Arrive by train and hire a bike!

If you come by train, we can meet you with our rental bikes at the train station with maps and directions. We have e-bikes and regular bikes for hire. We will also transfer your luggage to the accommodation venue if needed.

Day 1

From Sparbu train station you cycle north to Mære church where you can enjoy the beautiful view over the Borgenfjorden. Mære is a medieval church that has been a religious centre through both paganism and Christianity. Mære Church was erected on the same site where the old god temple stood. The church has a beautiful view over the Borgenfjord. You also pass Mære Agricultural School and the deer farm Gjørv which is one of the country’s largest deer farms with over 350 animals.

When arriving at road 763, you can now choose to take a detour to Gangstad farm dairy, Norway’s first authorized farm nursery. In the farm shop you can buy award-winning cheeses from the farm’s fresh cow’s milk and enjoy their fresh ice cream in the court yard.

Continuing towards Straumen town centre, you can make a stop at Gulburet, a bountiful farm shop and cafe with a a wide selection of bread from the farm bakery, flatbread, cheese, cured meats, jellies, chocolates, home knit products, handmade wood products, ointments and soaps from local producers and much more.
In the café above the farm shop you can enjoy a delicious meal with local ingredients. The menu always includes fresh baked goods and delicious cakes from Gulburet’s own farm bakery. In the summer you can also eat out in the yard

Day 2

Straumen town centre
We recommend that you take some time to explore Straumen town centre. Straumen is located right by the sea/fjord and hereyou will find cosy niche shops, an museum and the sculpture park Muustrøparken. In Muustrøparken there are 11 small and large sculptures by Nils Aas, one of Norway’s most renowned sculptors who was born and grew up in Straumen. If you are interested in art, pay a visit to Nils Aas Art Worksshop. In addition to the permanent exhibition about Nils Aas’ life and work, you will also find alternating exhibitions of contemporary art in image and sculpture.
Stop by Galleri Mitsel located nest to the park. Inderøy Landhandleri, Kjerringa me’ Straumen and Jostu are cosy is a cosy and fun shops to explore. For refreshments, you can visit Marens Bakeri next to Jostu.

Then you continue the bike ride around Borgenfjorden with the last leg back to Sparbu Station where you leave your bike.

You can also choose to an alternative route to Røra station, a little further south of Sparbu station. If you cycle to Røra, we recommend that you stop above Sund Folkehøgskole to see the view over Inderøy. You also cycle to the shop God Mat Lokalt, which is a shop with the best locally produced food and beverages from Trøndelag. The store is full of goods from over 70 food and beverage producers – in one sales arena. From Good MAt Lokalt it is about 1km to the train station, so here you can buy a lot of good food at home.
