Marsimartnan is a winter market festival built on traditions, quality, culture and experience.
Levanger is in the heart of lovely Innherred, one hour from Trondheim or half an hour from Trondheim Airport Værnes. Levanger is a centre for trade and culture, tradition and history. You will see an architectonic jewel featuring beautiful wooden buildings and green parks, close to sea, quayside and the ferry to Ytterøy. Here you can fish salmon from the ferry port in the centre of the town.
Marsimartnan, tied to Mattis day (24th February), can be traced back to Viking times.
And around the year 1750 more than 1,500 Swedish farmers with horses attended the marketplace and the traded with fishermen, fish farmers and other traders.
In March 1991, the modem marsimartnan was born again after 50 years of hibernation, partly with new content, but with solid cultural foundation.
In the town square we hope you will find that we have created "a village in the city" - with open wooden stalls and very few plastic tents.
The various cultural events will take place inside the big tent (lavvo) at the Market Square. The Lavvo will also be a cafe tent where students from Restaurant and Food science in Levanger High School offer their tempting products.
Jamtene (Swedish farmers from Jämtland) will of course be attanding this year as well. These farmers are a nice feature of the townscape and offer trips by horse and cart for big and small.
Fakkelnatta (a procession of people carrying torches) on Friday evening is definately on of the highlight of the market event. The entire downtown extinguish all electric lighting and the city is set in a magical atmosphere.
